Understanding Open Source

Talking to people at open source events, and recently at JandBeyond, I’m always surprised how easily people use the excuse ‘I don’t have time to contribute’  to the open source projects they use personally or as part of their business.

Those same people are however quick to point out governance issues, code bugs and missing features. Some of them even dare to demand for solutions for their problems.

Y4IT 2010 Experience: Boot-up. Connect. Converge.

In September I had the pleasure of speaking at #Y4IT in Manila, Philippines. In my talk ‘Open Source Your Career’ I shared my personal experience of how open source has helped me to shape my career.

Jeremy Ruston, original creator of the open source product TiddlyWiki, explains how to start an open source project. Very inspiring, with a bit of a deja-vue feeling.

On the 4th of April 2005 I joined the former Mambo Core Team. I knew little or nothing about F/OSS. In those days I wrote games using mostly C/C++ and Visual Studio.
Now 5 years later, I’m building Nooku, I develop web applications using PHP, Eclipse and a whole range of other F/OSS tools. How times have changed!
Today seemed like a great day to start a personal blog.  So here we are … Don’t expect anything fancy. Just my personal mumblings about Joomla, Nooku, open source, photography and the web.
